EcoSpectrum: Where Nature, Science & Diversity Meet
EcoSpectrum is an exciting, hands-on project that brings together ecology, creativity,
and inclusive learning.
Designed for neurodivergent young people aged 11–16, EcoSpectrum offers a chance to explore science outdoors, build real-world skills, and make a meaningful difference to Malta’s natural environment.
EcoSpectrum complements a wider ecosystem restoration initiative focused on Chadwick Lakes, one of Malta’s last remaining freshwater habitats. This precious and
rich ecosystem is under threat from invasive species (the Great Reed) and environmental degradation, this group of teens can be part of the solution!
Our purpose is to restore ecological balance, support biodiversity, and empower youth through active participation in environmental stewardship. By combining ecological rehabilitation with experiential learning, civic engagement, and inclusive participation, the project demonstrates how nature-based solutions can also foster social inclusion and educational innovation.
Our Goal
EcoSpectrum has three main objectives:
- Ecological Restoration: Support scientifically driven restoration efforts to enhance the ecological health and resilience of Chadwick Lakes.
- Youth Engagement: Provide underserved and neurodivergent youth with meaningful, STEAM-based outdoor learning opportunities to reconnect with nature while gaining practical skills in biodiversity conservation.
- Awareness and Education: Raise awareness about Malta’s freshwater ecosystems and their ecological importance among the wider public through participatory outreach and communication activities.
Learning in Nature
Building on the success of the Dwejra Lines pilot (2025) run by the MCS, EcoSpectrum
recognises that traditional classrooms don’t work for everyone. Our approach blends
project-based learning, STEAM education, and outdoor exploration, making learning
more engaging, flexible, and accessible.
A multidisciplinary team, comprising ecologists, educators, and a special needs
education expert, will deliver four outdoor learning sessions focused on creativity,
collaboration, and scientific inquiry.
What Will Participants Do
Participants will take part in real conservation work over 4 outdoor sessions between
March and April across the Chadwick Lakes area (meeting point: picnic area at the
entrance), including:
– Biodiversity mapping and ecological surveys
– Seed collection and cataloguing to protect native plant diversity
– Identifying and removing invasive species
– Tree planting
– Nature Walks
– Sensory-friendly & art-based activities
