Chemistry fuelled the rise of free love, drug use, and a new ever-resonant culture. But, this culture also has a dark side: sexually transmitted infection, lost potential and lives. For over 20 years, Prof. Richard Muscat has researched the effects of cocaine use. His research, which he described in this event, has focused on brain pleasure pathways that affect how people act. The brain chemicals dopamine and serotonin play critical roles influencing how people respond and unfortunately relapse on drugs. Another two important links are the age of drug exposure and anxiety. Such research is vital to develop policies that truly help addiction.

The speaker chairs the National Drug Commission in Malta and coordinates the research platform of Pompidou, a group that combats drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking.
