Dwejra, Gozo, is one of the last remaining dark sky sites in Malta. For years, it has been cherished by educators, scientists, and environmentalists. However, increasing light pollution threatens this invaluable resource.
Why Dwejra Matters
- Scientific Studies & Education: Dwejra is crucial for scientific studies, training future scientists, and educating students of all ages in STEM fields. It has been the location of educational astronomy nights for schoolchildren and a training site for university students for decades.
- Ecological Importance: The area is home to several species of Shearwaters and European Storm-petrels, all of which are sensitive to light pollution.
- Dark Sky Tourism: Dwejra’s dark skies attract tourists seeking views of the Universe, presenting an opportunity for sustainable tourism.
The Problem
Despite being designated as a Dark Sky Heritage Area, light pollution has worsened in recent years. Light emanating from boathouses, kiosks, and a nearby quarry is spoiling the night sky.
Our Call to Action
The Malta Chamber of Scientists, along with other organizations, has signed an open letter to the Minister for the Environment, Energy and Regeneration of the Grand Harbour and the Minister for Gozo and Planning, urging them to take action. We are demanding that all lights be switched off at sundown to ensure Dwejra remains dark throughout the night, as was previously the case.
Why This Matters to You
Light pollution not only affects our ability to observe the night sky but also has adverse effects on ecology and human health. By protecting Dwejra’s dark skies, we can:
- Preserve a unique site for scientific research and education.
- Protect vulnerable species.
- Offer the public a chance to experience the beauty of the night sky.
- Support sustainable tourism.
