Oct 2011 - A 3D Journey into the Brain

Dr. Mario Valentino is a world-renewed researcher studying brain injury at the University of Malta using the latest high-tech equipment.  In this edition of Malta Café Scientifique, he showcased beautiful 3D images, videos and animations of mice brains, neurons and the cells that support them. Single cells can be easily picked out and even the blood vessels that supply them can be seen. These 3D images are vital to distinguish between the different cells in the brain and the important changes that occur when blood flow stops. Once this is understood, the process can be reversed or at least controlled.

He explained how this research could lead to advances that save patients from the worst effects of brain injury. They could help neurosurgeons save essential parts of the brain and also lead to treatments that alleviate symptoms of a disease that touches millions.
